Books of the Month: October

With December just around the corner, October feels like a rather distant memory, however as both October and November are incredibly busy months in our house full of birthdays and lots of excitement, we hadn't quite got round to sharing our favourite reads of last month until now so here goes...

Books of the Month: September

Hello, today we are sharing our favourite books from September. Whenever I sit down to write our monthly favourites post, I am amazed that it is that time again but here we are already more than a week into October. It will be time to go Trick or Treating before you know it!

Speaking of Halloween, you may have already seen our post about our favourite Chapter Book this month, Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone. As our choice is already such a well known book, instead of doing a standard review, I shared our experience of reading Harry Potter to the Mini Reviewers . As well as a favourite Chapter Book, we have picked our favourite Non-Fiction Book and Picture Book from last month too. We do hope you enjoy our choices!

Hello and welcome back to Along Came Poppy! Today we are discussing our favourite Chapter Book from September, Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone by J.K Rowling, published by Bloomsbury. As it is a book that so many of you will be familiar with already, instead of a standard review, I am sharing my thoughts on when to read Harry Potter to your little bookworms.

The Mini Reviewers have been back at school and nursery for a few weeks now and that combined with the distinct change of weather, means that Autumn has most definitely arrived! You may have noticed we were a little quiet over the Summer months, this was mainly because we were too busy reading as well as having a few bookish adventures of our own. Poohsticks anyone? Or perhaps a spot of Gruffalo Orienteering?

Not only did we go on a bookshop spending spree, we also borrowed many summer themed picture books from our local library and were lucky enough to be sent several new releases from publishers too! Chapter Book of the Month: Cuddle The Magic Kitten - Magical Friends

Cuddle The Magic Kitten - Magical Friends is the first story in a new series of early chapter books written by Hayley Daze, the pen name of Jane Clarke, author of the bestselling Dinosaur Cove books. We were kindly sent a copy of this book for review consideration by the publisher, Willow Tree Books. Read on to find out how this book supports newly independent readers and why we have chosen it as our Chapter Book of the Month for May.

Books of the Month - April 2018

Over the last few months we have read some fantastic books including old classics as well as brand new titles. Therefore it seems appropriate that the top books we read in April include a mix of both.

Non-fiction round-up: Let's hear it for the girls!

At the start of the year we promised to review a non-fiction book each month and although we have been picking our favourites, we have completely neglected to write about them, so we thought it was about time for a non-fiction round-up. As you'll see there's a bit of a theme, this was purely unintentional but it works well especially as it was International Women's Day at the beginning of March, so without further delay "Let's hear it for the girls!"

Chapter Book of the Month: Isadora Moon Goes to the Fair by Harriet Muncaster

Isadora Moon is back for her seventh adventure and this time she is off to the fair. If you haven't come across these books before, you are in for a treat! Isadora is half vampire, half fairy so totally unique and as Mini Reviewer, Izzie (6) is one of her biggest fans, this new release had to be our Chapter Book of the Month for March!

Picture Book of the Month (February): Superhero Mum

As tomorrow is Mother's Day our very belated picture book choice for February had to be Superhero Mum written by Timothy Knapman, illustrated by Joe Berger and published by Nosy Crow.

Chapter Book of the Month: WE ARE NOT FROGS!

So February seems to be whizzing by which means that it is time for us to share our chapter book choice for this month. Mini Reviewer, Izzie, is getting quite into the swing of "team reading" longer books at bedtime. Having finished Matilda, all the current Isadora Moon stories and several Rainbow Fairy stories, we have just started Bee Boy and are trying to finish Pippi Longstocking. Unfortunately I seem to be getting even slower at writing about our favourites but please do bear with us!

Picture Book of the Month: The Last Chip

Our picture book pick this month has to be The Last Chip created by Duncan Beedie and published by Templar Books. 

Chapter Book of the Month: NIGHT ZOOKEEPER The Giraffes of Whispering Wood

To mark the start of the new year, we thought we would shake up how we organise our book reviews at Along Came Poppy. So now every month we will be picking our favourite new chapter book, picture book and non-fiction read to share with you. Where possible we will try and feature new releases but from time to time we may throw in an older book that we have read for the first time. It is our way of ensuring we include a fair share of non-fiction (we do read a lot) and of course, chapter books, which we are now reading more of. We do hope you continue to enjoy our reviews and find some book-spiration this year!
