Hello October! Autumn is well and truly here and with it those chilly mornings and dark evenings. However, with plenty of puddles to splash in; leaves to throw; and conkers to collect, we think it could be our favourite time of year! So we are really looking forward to the half term holiday at the end of the month and, of course, Halloween!
Last year we celebrated Halloween with some spooky book-inspired baking and crafts, before dressing up and going trick or treating. We also read a few "not-so-scary" Halloween books. You can read all about last year's stories here and, in anticipation of this year's celebrations, we have already added a few more "not-so-scary" books to our collection.
Not-so-scary Halloween Books
Pip and Posy: The Scary Monster is a great autumnal book and may also help prepare little ones for any "trick or treat" visitors. In the story it is raining, the leaves are falling off the trees, which are shown to be heavy with apples and pears. Posy is baking when a monster suddenly appears at the back door. Posy is a bit scared but soon she realises the monster is just her friend, Pip in costume. Posy then has a go at dressing up before the two friends go and play in the garden together. It is no secret that we a huge Pip and Posy fans in this house - we just can't get enough of Axel Scheffler's playful duo! You can buy your own copy here: Pip and Posy: The Scary Monster by Axel Scheffler (Nosy Crow, £7.99)
Our second choice is Ten Little Monsters, a great counting book, which Mini Reviewer, Izzie, happened to spot in the supermarket. She enjoyed Ten Little Superheroes so much that she insisted we picked this one up too! The ten little monsters are off trick or treating but will they make it to the Halloween party? They encounter a werewolf, a headless knight, a green ghost and even a zombie gang along the way. With chantable rhyming verse, we guarantee this book will have you all shouting "Booo!" by the end. Click here to buy: Ten Little Monsters by Mike Brownlow and Simon Rickerty (Orchard Books, £6.99)
That's not my witch... is our final not-so-scary pick and was also found by Izzie during the same supermarket trip. It's the latest touchy-feely board book in Usborne's "That's not my..." series. As it's book number 51, you already know what you are getting and this one doesn't disappoint. With great images and interesting fabrics to explore on each page, it makes a perfect non-sugary Halloween treat for little ones. Poppy particularly likes the fluffy cat! You can buy it here: That's not my witch... by Fiona Watt and Rachel Wells (Usborne, £6.99)
A special book for Autumn
We would also love to share this beautiful new pop-up picture book with you. Created by David Carter, "Autumn" is the third book in a series of books about the seasons. The series is a great way to visualise what each of the different seasons bring. In this book, the fabulous pop-ups depicting the flora and fauna of Autumn are accompanied by simple text making it a great book for young children. Despite the wildlife being mainly native to North America, the book clearly conveys the mood of the season. We particularly love the pop-up pumpkins! You can find out more about this book here: Autumn: A Pop-Up Book by David Carter (Abrams Appleseed, £9.99)

Oh yes, I had forgotten this one! Great suggestion :)
DeleteMy Reception class and I had a lot of fun last year with "We're Off To Find The Witch's House" by Mr Krieb. It's a "not-so-scary" book about dressing up and going trick or treating. We also enjoyed "Halloween Surprise" by Corinne Demas, which is about choosing what costume to wear. All costumes are handmade, so this might be a great one for Izzie!
