Everything Unicorn

It's official, we have got unicorn fever in this house but there's no need to panic, this is not some sort of tropical disease, no, this is the unicorn craze that seems to have been sweeping the nation for some time now. So this week we are embracing everything sparkly, cute, shiny and even gooey that this magical, horned creature has to offer!

Something Sparkly...

Add some sparkle to storytime with these two fabulous unicorn-themed books. Sugarlump and the Unicorn is written by one of our favourite authors, Julia Donaldson. The cute and whimsical illustrations are the work of the extremely talented, Lydia Monks. Together Julia and Lydia have created several other brilliant children's books together, including The Singing Mermaid; The Princess and The Wizard; and the What The Ladybird Heard trilogy.

Sugarlump and the Unicorn is not a new book, it was first published in 2013, but "with glitter on every page" it certainly continues to delight the Mini Reviewers. The story is about a rocking horse called Sugarlump who longs to be a real horse. With the help of a magical snow-white, blue eyed unicorn, who likes to toss her mane, Sugarlump's wish comes true. However, Sugarlump soon realises that his new life is perhaps not right for him and he makes another wish, will he ever find happiness? Filled with great rhyming verse, lots of repetition and just a little bit of magic, this book is bound to make little unicorn fans very happy.

Our second choice is That's not my unicorn... the 50th title in Usborne's bestselling touchy-feely book series for babies and toddlers. With a shimmery cover and silver edged pages this book is certainly our favourite "That's not my..." yet. Rainbow manes, glittery wings and sparkly horns all feature in Rachel Wells' very cute illustrations. This is a very special book for the littlest of bookworms.

You can buy a copy of Sugarlump and the Unicorn by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks (Macmillan, £10.99) here and That's not my unicorn... by Fiona Watts and Rachel Wells (Usborne, £6.99) here.

Something Cute...

This brand new book, published by Nosy Crow in association with the National Trust, is filled with 24 high quality cards to colour in. Each card features a unique  and intricate design by Rebecca Jones. From magical unicorns to stunning swans, this book is packed with gorgeous pictures that will get everyone's creative juices flowing. There is even a matching envelope and sticker for each card and, as the cards are blank, they can be used for almost any occasion. We had great fun adding some personal touches to a few of the cards for some upcoming birthdays.

You can buy a copy of The Colouring Book of Cards and Envelopes: Unicorns and Rainbows illustrated by Rebecca Jones (Nosy Crow, £9.99) here.

Something shiny, something gooey?

We recently spotted these amazing unicorn goodies when out shopping and the lovely team at Smiggle sent us some to take a look at. First up is this super shiny unicorn notebook. It has a hidden mirror on the front, dividers inside and locks to keep all your secrets safe! Mini Reviewer, Izzie, was incredibly excited by the little lock and key but to be honest, I'd quite like to keep this one for myself!

Sweet Magic Lockable Unicorn Notebook RRP: £13.50
We were also sent a pot of Unicorn Goo, yes goo, complete with a hidden unicorn inside! The Mini Reviewers LOVED it! It was slimey, stretchy, splatty, glittery and they even got it to make some very strange noises! It kept them occupied for about an hour, which is unheard of! It's back in the pot for now but I'm sure it will be out again very soon.

Smiggle Unicorn Goo RRP: £7.00
