Spooky Stories from Bloomsbury #ReadYourSocksOff

So with Halloween right around the corner we have some spooky picture books to share with you from Bloomsbury Picture Books. Since September Bloomsbury have been PAIRing brilliant picture books with a different theme each month to introduce children to some exciting new reads. September's theme was FRIENDSHIP and you can read about what Mamma Filz thought of Bloomsbury's selection here. This month's theme is of course Halloween, just take a look at this fairly spooky selection we were sent and get ready to READ YOUR SOCKS OFF!

I Went Trick-or-Treating written and illustrated by Paul Howard is our favourite of the three books we received. The story is about a little boy and girl's trick-or-treating adventure and starts "I went Trick-or-Treating and I scared... a creepy, sleepy spider..." As the story progresses more and more creepy creatures are added to their list and it becomes a great game of memory to recite them all in the right order! We found it a really fun book to read aloud and is perfect for the whole family to join in with.

The second book we received is Scary Hairy Party written Claire Freedman and illustrated by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet.

You're invited to a party -
what fun! Hip, hip hooray!
So come along to Monster's house
at 3 o'clock today...

It's a wacky and super colourful story that takes place in Raymond's Hair Salon. Raymond's customers are getting ready for a Monster Party and are all incredibly upset after a series of mix-ups at the salon. However when they reach the party they realise that their disaster "dos" have left them looking perfect for the party as it has a rather special theme.

The final book in Bloomsbury's trio is First Day at Skeleton School written and illustrated by Sam Lloyd.

Deep, deep in this dark forest
lurking amongst the trees,
there's a creepy night-time school
no human ever sees.

This is a story about a school with a difference, a school for skeletons! But you'll also meet a whole host of other little monsters there too. Learn to howl with a werewolf, dance with the skeletons and fly with the witches. You may even get your lunch served by zombies. This is a great book for Halloween but also perfect for any little monsters that have just started school!

Thank you to Bloomsbury for such a great selection of books and if you liked the look of these you may also like to take a look at our Halloween choices from previous years:

We wish you all a very Happy Halloween!

  10. I love the sound and look of Scary Hairy Party. The description and cover alone make me want to read it. Sadly, it's too young for our 9yo but I know she'd have loved it a few years ago! #kcacols
