wash, wear, repeat... #EcoverLaundry

Looking back to my childhood, I recall that the washing machine was constantly on the go and there were always clothes drying on the line outside. Fast forward 30ish years and not much has changed. As a busy Mum of three, it seems like the laundry basket is never empty and so continues the inevitable cycle of wash, wear, repeat...

I spend a lot of money on washing detergent every month and, due to the eczema issues in our family, I am very particular about the products we use. I usually choose a non-bio formula manufactured by a leading brand and avoid fabric softener. I need a detergent that is tough enough to deal with all the weird and wonderful stains and smells that come with parenthood yet is gentle on sensitive skin.

A fresh look at Ecover

Last week I put the new plant based Non-Bio Concentrated Laundry Detergent from Ecover through its paces. Fragranced with lavender and sandalwood, this dermatologically tested formula claims to be tough on stains yet kind on sensitive skin. Like all Ecover products, it is also gentle on the planet. This all sounds perfect, doesn't it? But how did the new formula fare when up against a week's worth of real family washing? Read on to find out more...

wash, wear, repeat...

Our washing machine rarely gets a break and a typical week's washing includes pretty much everything - dark loads, light loads, school uniform, swim kits, dance kits, shirts, bedding, towels, bibs and washable baby wipes. You name it and I've probably washed it! Last week even baby "Rainbow Dash" had to take a quick spin in our machine after a very unfortunate middle-of-the-night mishap!

I don't have a specific routine or system when doing the laundry, I literally just separate lights from darks and get going. So I grabbed a basket of light coloured washing, my bottle of new Ecover detergent and headed to our hardworking machine. After locating the correct compartment for liquid detergent  (I usually just throw it in with the washing), I poured in the maximum recommended amount for a full load as we live in a hard water area. I then set the machine to 30 degrees and off she went.

I took the opportunity to make myself a nice cup of tea before helping my little boy with his own washing. As you can see he is already well trained...

Drying time

Once the load was done, it was drying time. When I first opened the bottle of Ecover, I had been struck by the lovely, fresh yet distinctly floral fragrance of the detergent. So I was delighted to discover that the smell was still there when pegging the freshly laundered clothes on the washing line. The clothes not only smelled fresh, they looked really clean too. Everything was going swimmingly but then the heavens opened and I quickly had to do the "mad dash" to transfer all the washing indoors! Autumn had most definitely arrived.

One week later...

A week on and many loads of laundry later, the original washing is finally dry (hooray!) and some of the clothes have been worn already. I am really pleased to say that the little eczema suffers of the family have not reacted to the change in detergent at all.

I can now see why Ecover's new non-bio laundry detergent is a Mumsnet Rated* product. Inspired by nature and recommended by THIS mum, the new detergent has proved it can perform well even at 30 degrees. It is tough on everyday stains, gentle enough for my children's sensitive skin and although the wash, wear, repeat... cycle continues, it smells fresher than ever! All Ecover needs to do now is bottle us some sunshine so we can all line-dry our clothes on those pesky rain-filled days!

*85% of Mumsnet users would buy again, and 89% would recommend it to a friend.

This post is an entry for BritMums #EcoverLaundry Challenge, sponsored by Ecover. I received a sample of the product for review purposes, all opinions are my own.

  1. Yep, seems as soon as one set is dry there's more wet clothes to be hung up. It's a never ending cycle! #kcacols

  9. I always make the mistake of taking the washing outside. It rained that much that I just left it all out there for like two nights! My washing machine doesn't stop either, we may give this a go :) #KCACOLS
