Five Favourite Train Stories

Mini Reviewer, Theo (3), likes anything with wheels but he really, really LOVES trains. We are incredibly lucky to live close to the National Railway Museum in York and we have made many a trip to look at the "giant wheels". On Theo's second birthday we even managed to see "The Flying Choo Choo" otherwise known as the Flying Scotsman!

This year Theo's birthday trip was also train related as we visited Thomas Land in Staffordshire. We may at some point share our experiences of Thomas Land but, for now, all we need to say is it's a must for all little Thomas fans! Theo still talks about it daily, so we've promised him we'll go back again soon.

Now you may be wondering what Theo's love of trains has to do with books, well it is relevant today we promise. As we've reached the end of yet another week (seriously where does the time go?), it's time for #Top5Friday with The Happy Book Club and this week we're discussing... you've guessed it... books about trains! Narrowing our selection down to five books was pretty tricky but we've tried to include a bit of variety so here goes...

My First Train is a brilliant shaped board book with moving wheels. We picked this copy up from Campbell Books at last year's Baby Show at the NEC. It's a very simple story with just a few pages but the colourful illustrations by Marion Billet are a lot of fun and there are things to spot along the way.

Terrific Trains is from the Amazing Machines series by Tony Mitton and Ant Parker. We have quite a few of these rhyming books but the train one is our favourite. It's a great introduction to trains and what they can do with some fantastic illustrations.

Dog on a Train is a beautifully illustrated wordless book by Kate Prendergast. We previously reviewed this book in full, check out our review here.

The Polar Express is an incredibly magical book, perhaps not for this time of year, but certainly one to pop on your (whispers) Christmas list!

Our top train story is A Visit to London for Thomas the Tank Engine which came out last year (2016). We purchased this before visiting the city as there are some fantastic pictures of several famous landmarks including Tower Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral, the Shard and the Houses of Parliament. It's the perfect choice for any little Thomas fan and was a great choice for our trip to London.

We hope you like our selection. Do you have a favourite train book?

Until next time... HAPPY READING!

  5. The only train book that we have on our bookshelf is The Polar Express! We did have lots of the Tony Mitton / Ant Parker books when my daughter was younger, Amazing Aeroplanes was our favourite.
